Subject: Task 13

Create a good communication activity and describe it to your classmates. Say, which type it, is, according to Littlewood.

I suggest an activity where students have information about different countries and cities around the world. I choose some magazines and articles talking about travel. In these articles/magazines there are lots of information about cities and countries, including tourist information, accommodations and so on. I made some copies of different articles. In the classroom it’s necessary to split the students in small groups (for example: group A, B, C, D, E) and given to them some instructions:
- Some students (Group A) are going to travel, but they didn’t decided where they are going.
- The other students (Groups B, C, D and E) have to choose one country or city to read and to talk about it. These groups have to choose different countries or cities from each other. They are going to act like travel agents.
- The role of Groups B, C, D and E is to convince Group A to visit the country they have chosen. They have to give as much as possible information about the country/city and make the group A decide for this country. They have to use imagination to convince Group A that the country selected is the best for Group A.
- Group A can take some notes about prices, accommodation or tourism information that could influence their decision.
- Each group (B, C, D and E) has 5 to 10 minutes to show some pictures and give information about the country/city. When the groups had finished, Group A has some minutes do discuss and decide which country/city they are going to visit. Group A has to explain their reasons for their choice.

Teachers could find these articles in some magazines or take information from Internet. I selected some articles from Travel Holiday (an American Magazine about travel), Ícaro Brasil (Varig Inflight Magazine with articles in English).

This kind of activity make students ask and give information, describe places, discuss and evaluate this information in order to decide where they are going. I classify this activity as a Functional Communication Activity where students process information.
