According to Littlewood (1981:39), functional communication activities place learners in a situation where they need to use language for a well defined communicative purpose.

1 - Create a good communication activity and describe it to your classmates. Say which type it is, according to Littlewood. It MUST be original. Do not copy any activity from textbooks.

Vocabulary activity

First, the teacher should make a warm-up with students. He/she could show students some pictures from Iraq and asks students to relate some words to the pictures, stimulating them to tell something about it.

Then the teacher could hand in an article about Iraq, about its economic and social features and the recent war between Iraq and the U.S. for students to read. After that, he/she splits the class in two groups: one group would be supporting the war and the other would be against it. The class should form a circle and the teacher would work as a mediator.

The aim of this activity is to improve students´ vocabulary and it also helps to create a real-life situation where students should use information from the article and exchange among them through linguistics features. I think this activity fits on Littlewood´s explanation of "functional communication activities" because students have to use information from the text to build up a debate.
