A hand out of a cartoon – a wordless one – is given out to students prior to the lesson itself. In this cartoon, there is a story of a woman who is robbed. Then, a police officer comes along and as he is about to make an arrest he recognizes the robber as his friend. The victim goes to the police station and makes a complaint. As they are lead to court they look as if they had run out of luck and will be sentenced to jail. The minute the judge walks into the courtroom they recognize the judge as their friend!

Because of Yahoo’s restrictions in sending attachments I was unable to send the cartoon itself. It will be enclosed in the folder we are supposed to hand to Vera at the end of the term.

Lesson planning

Cartoon – “ It’s good to have friends”
This lesson is aimed at intermediate to advanced students at the age of 12 onwards. It focuses mainly on speaking but does involve some work on text production.

I find that according to Littlewood the following lesson is a Functional Communication activity of the “processing information” type. This is because in this proposed activity “learners have access to all relevant facts… and the stimulus for communication comes from the need to discuss and evaluate these facts in order to reach a decision”(p.36).

Being a communicative lesson it will surely get students to communicate, focus in content rather than form and explore the variety in the language used. A dynamic classroom exchange in pairs.

But if we intended to relate to other methods and authors we could also say that this lesson has, in terms of methodology used, a mixture of different methods applied. It is inevitable to see elements of other methods in one leeson. To begin with, one can find that some of the approach used relates to “alternatives to PPP” where students will be presented with new vocabulary, then, they will practice in pairs as they try to find the best ways to “write” the story in the form of text production.

Last, but not least, I also think this lesson incorporates parts of “ Task-based Learning (TBL) ” as “students are presented with a task they have to perform... focusing on the task and not the structure” (Hamer J. Chapter 6 –A5)

Activity
Lesson Plan (based on a fifty-minute lesson)

Warm-up Activity:
Introduction of key vocabulary by describing an actual personal situation and what vocabulary should be used. Explanation of possible points of conflict e.g. difference between rob and steal, to arrest, judge, trial, etc.

Teacher-student approach. Expected duration of activity: 20 minutes.

Main Activity:
Class is divided into pairs. Cartoon sheet is handed out and students are asked to discuss the cartoon and write a title for the story and write text describing the events (inserted in cartoon-like balloons). Teacher should make him/herself available to possible queries, questions by students. 20 minutes.

Peer-editing: Students then, are asked to exchange their work and comment on the results, how funny the cartoon is, use of language, etc. Ideally, minimum teacher’s intervention as students should be encouraged to express their thoughts and opinions. Possible 10 minutes.

Possible extension to lesson:
1A - If there is sufficient time, students could make comments over the reason why the cartoon is intended to be funny.
2B – A piece of writing telling the story about the cartoon could be asked either as homework or for the following lesson.
