***Acivity: Lost in the woods ***

The activity I propose is for all ages and I believe it fits to students from the intermediate level on. This activity would take, in my opinion, from 15 to 30 minutes. It has to be well analysed first, and maybe some vocabulary will have to be pre-taught.

Divide the class into groups of 3 – 4 people (optional). Then tell them all the following story:

“You all have gone in an excursion in the woods with your school, but your group decided to take a shortcut, and now you think you are lost. You all have some food and some water, but some of you have other equipments, that the others don’t know about.”

Now, each one of the students will receive a paper. The papers will be handed out randomly and one student cannot know about the others’. It will contain the following information.

Student 1: You have a compass. You think you are not lost, you know exactly where you are going, although your partners do not agree with you. You absolutely hate student 4, but the others are nice people.

Student 2: You have a cell phone and some extra water. You think you should call for help, but your phone doesn’t work here. You are almost sure that if you go to the peak of a hill nearby you will be able to make a call. People believe you are boring and spoiled, and in this group you like only student 3.

Student 3: You have a pocket knife. You are so hungry that you could kill anything and eat it. You don’t have any food, because you have already eatten it. You think you all should wait for help, because you are too afraid and too nervous to go on. You are very popular and everybody likes you.

Student 4: You have some extra food and you know how to walk in the forest and things like that, because you have been a scout. Due to your knowledge, you believe you are the leader of the group. You want to persuade them to look for the rest of the group. You don’t like student 3.

Students have to announce only their numbers, so that the teacher and the others in the group know who they are. Depending on the class, the activity can be done in one big group. The teacher would just have to create more ‘roles’, as many as necessary.

Now students have to be encouraged to talk and act, as if they were in the situation. They should be warned to act out their characters, as if they were roles to perform. This activity does not need to have a winner. The main objective of it is to develop students ability of persuasion. It is a good oportunity to use the language with a purpose, in a meaningful and ‘real’, though not probable, situation.

After a time, the students are called back to the big group (if they were separated) and questioned about the experience. How it was, if they reached their objectives, which one of the group was more convincing. Teacher could ask to student 4 how was his relationship with student 1. this discussion could provide material for more further activities, such as writing about it, making a written record of the adventure.
