Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

According to Lewis (1997), the Lexical Approach is based on the result of the acquisition of a large store of fixed and semi-fixed prefabricated items, that is, language often consists of multi-word prefabricated chunks, not only traditional grammar and vocabulary. Some principles of the Lexical Approach include:

- Language consists of grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalised grammar.
- The use of 'lexical phrases' such as collocations, idioms, fixed and semi-fixed phrases which belong to an important part of the language.
- To raise students' awareness of the facts about the composition of language and develop their ability to 'chunk' language successfully.

Lewis (1997) suggests that exposure to enough suitable input is the key to increase the learner's lexicon and then most vocabulary is acquired, not taught.
