The lexical approach is a teaching and learning methodology that focus on the lexis, not only on words, but also on words combined. Lexis, according to Lewis (1997b), consists on different items, from words and polywords to collocations, institutionalized utterances, sentence or text frames. Instead of dividing units into smaller pieces, the lexical approach is more concerned with larger meaningful components, chunks, which can be used, avoided or changed depending on the situation of use. Accordingly, neither grammar (as a set of rules) nor vocabulary (understood as isolated words) can be considered as the central principles of a meaning-centered syllabus; “language consists of grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalized grammar."

As for activities, they have a lot to do with communicative approach principles since they deal with real use of language. Teachers should center their instructions and exercises on chunks and “the ways they can be pieced together, along with the ways they vary and the situations in which they occur”. This way, students should learn how to gradually process those units and use them successfully to reach communicative goals.
