Subject: Task 10

The lexical approach was developed in order to be an alternative to grammar-based approaches. It is based on the language acquisition ability of the learner "to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as unanalysed wholes, or chunks, and that these chunks become the raw data by which learners perceive patterns of language traditionally thought of as grammar"(Lewis, 1993). According to Michael Lewis, the lexical approach suggests that:
* Lexis is the basis of language.
* The key principle of a lexical approach is that language consists of grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalized grammar.
* One of the central organizing principles of any meaning-centered syllabus should be lexis.

Moreover, studious of the Lexical approach argue "that language consists of meaningful chunks that, when combined, produce continuous coherent text, and only a minority of spoken sentences are entirely new creations"(Moudraia).

All in all, the main goal of the lexical approach is to produce language under the basis of a retrieval of larger phrasal units; not only from a syntactic rule-governed process.
