TASK 11

Genre-based approach is not something new to Brazilian
teachers, although
the term may not be commonly used. We here people say
that they are teaching
(or taking) Business English at this or that school.
Well business texts,
especially the ones used in most Business English
courses, are generally
using a specific genre.
When we refer to a text, be it written or oral, as
formal or informal we are
referring to the genre.
The genre-based approach is the one teaching beyond
sentence formation, but
also the coherence within the text. More than just
learning how to speak or
write sentences, one must learn how to ´tie together`
the ideas by
connecting the sentences in a particular style, if you
will. This becomes
particularly clear if one is to read, or write, a
scientific paper. This
genre demands specific structures, and ´techniques.`
Learners must be
taught them in order to be proficient.
That is not to say that only people in the position of
writing scientific
papers should learn about genre. Gallagher states that
the approach has been
successfully applied in all levels in the Australian
schools, including
kindergarten.
Using the communicative approach, one which allows to
great flexibility, the
teacher may approach different genres according to the
interests and
necessities of the students. For example, it’s a well
known fact that rhythm
and rhymes are great to facilitate memorization. Even
basic students may be
taught using the poetry or music genres.
