Subject: Task 10

Task 10 – Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

The clearer explanation about lexical approach is shown in Eric Digest, according to my opinion. There they describe this approach as that one through which learners get proficiency with Lexis, or word and word combinations. It is not something easy to see for those who are dealing with language as a grammatical system, but its basis is logical. It is assumed in lexical approach “that an important part of language acquisition is the ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as unanalyzed wholes”. And some fixed expressions are presented in order to illustrate parts (or chunks) of language which are: “I’m sorry”, “I didn’t mean to make you jump” and “That will never happen to me”. Moreover, It is stated in lexical approach that some fixed expressions occur more frequently in spoken language that sentences originally created.

The principles presented for the lexical approach are:

1 ) The grammar/vocabulary dichotomy is invalid.
2 ) Collocation is used as an organising principle.
3 ) Successful language is a wider concept than accurate language.
4 ) The Observe-Hypothesise-Experiment cycle replaces the Present-Practise-Produce Paradigm.
5 ) Language consists of grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalised grammar.

This latter principle shows the importance of lexis rules in order to understand and speak a language. And the principle number 3 puts accuracy on a second place as communicative approach does.
