“Language consists of grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalised grammar”. This is the basic premise of the lexical approach, introduced by Michael Lewis. It means that, in the process of learning or acquiring a language, one understands it as whole “chunks” put together in a coherent and cohesive way. So the tendency is to separate them not completely word-by-word, but in smaller meaningful sets of words.

According to this approach, lexis play a very important role in both language acquisition and learning. It analyses language from lexical items, rather than from regular vocabulary made of isolated words. Lewis also says that "instead of words, we consciously try to think of collocations, and to present these in expressions. Rather than trying to break things into ever smaller pieces, there is a conscious effort to see things in larger, more holistic, ways". The Present-Practise-Produce paradigm is rejected, in favour of a paradigm based on the Observe-Hypothesise-Experiment cycle.
