Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

The lexical approach focuses on developing learners' ability with lexis, or words and the words combinations. The Lexical Approach is based on developing the learners proficiency based on the thought that an important part of language acquisition and the skill to make and understand lexical phrases.

According to Michael Lewis, within the concepts of the lexical approach:
- Language consists of grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalised grammar.
- One of the central organizing principles of the meaning-centered syllabus should be lexis.
- Collocation is integrated as an organizing principle within syllabuses.
- The usage of 'chunks'.
- Grammar as a receptive skill, involving the perception of similarity and difference.
- Successful language is a wider concept than accurate language.
- Collocation is integrated as an organizing principle within syllabuses.
- The central metaphor of language is holistic - an organism; not atomistic - a machine.
- Receptive skills, particularly listening, are given enhanced status.
