“A genre is a particular class of speech events (in discourse analysis) which are considered as being of the same type, having particular and distinctive characteristics”. In fact, in according to Bakhtin, genre can be understood by a chunk of rules created by human beings to be followed in different social contexts. These rules are related to social behaviors and linguistics choices made by people when they producing the language.

A genre-based approach is a method of teaching that provides interaction between learner and language focusing the language use considering its social aspects. Genre-based work with activities that teach students how to use language for social purposes, for example: writing business letters or curriculums, talking by telephone, formal and informal conversations, etc.

According to Maria Aparecida Gazotti, an English teacher at PUC-SP, in order to apply genre in teaching, the teachers should to label the texts they are dealing with, that is, to know the purpose of them and chose the suitable language used in it. For Gazotti, some of teachers seem to be very worry about grammar when they teach genre and avoid fitting the language in a context.
