Subject: Task 11

Explain what a genre-based approach is.

Genres are different ways one can use language in order to reach a certain goal. Their typical structure varies and depends a great deal on their purpose and characteristic language pattern features. Genres are connected to literacy and it is a “methodology for teaching how a text ‘hangs together’” (Gallagher, 2000) and conveys a particular meaning in a given context. In other words, genres focus on texts and not on sentences. A further research, though, is necessary in order to identify genres in the spoken language.

The genre-approach aims to raise students’ awareness of the linguistic features of a genre and, by doing so, it contributes to the development of literacy. This approach requires that before writing a particular genre, students be exposed to it (by reading, analysing and discussing it). They receive a certain amount of input that will back them up in the task that they are supposed to perform. It is worth remembering that the texts used in the classroom are authentic and this way students may show more interest in the task.

Such approach enables students to understand the purpose of each genre and how to articulate the changes of language within different contexts. Students also become more aware of the relationship between language and social context, helping to improve their communicative competence.
