There are many different genre groups and each of them have specific characteristics in common and serve for specific social purposes. Each different genre can be identified by their structural organisation and linguistic features of a determined genre text. A business letter, for example, follows a pre-determined model of how to address the person who you are writing to, how to end the letter and so on.
The genre-based approach has been practised in Australia for many years, both in public school and ESL contexts. A typical genre-based lesson consists of the following steps:
1st step: Teacher models a particular genre
2nd step: Teacher assists in the joint construction of a similar text
3rd step: Students attempt to create a text independently
According to Critchley, vocabulary and grammar appropriate to the genre are dealt with as required during the development of the text, which is organised in a structure appropriate to the intended social purpose.
