TASK 11

Explain what a Genre-based approach is.

Genre literacy, which developed mostly in Australia during the last decade, is an attempt to create a new pedagogic space in the writing classroom. It gives emphasis on texts and not sentences meanings. Thus, students have the challenge to create texts such as essays, reports and summaries to mention just a few most typical genres in college setting. It means that students are introduced to range of different disciplines and contexts ( such as literature, history, business, etc ) so as to prepare students for situations not solely located within familiar settings and involving personal relationships.
A genre approach requires that before attempting to write the students have been exposed to the genre by reading analyzing and discussing examples of it. The inteconection between reading and writing is stressed in most language programs, though the genre of reading is to that students are required to write.
