Subject: Task 11

1 – Explain what a genre-based approach is.

“A genre is a particular class of speech events (in discourse analysis) which are considered as being of the same type, having particular and distinctive characteristics.”

The genre approach is linked to literacy, and how the texts are classified: drama, tragedy, comedy, play, fairy tale, etc. In fact, that is the first thing most of us might think when we talk about genre. In this kind of approach students have enough exposure by reading, analysing and talking about the texts of one genre, before writing about it. It also helps students to see the relationship between language and its applications. According to Gallagher: “a genre approach is not a matter of applying formulaic prescriptions of how a text should be structured. Instead, it is based on an analysis of how a text creates meaning in its context of use and then how this knowledge can be utilized by students to write in the same genre themselves.”
