Subject: Task 11

The articles on the sites http://personal.cityu.edu.hk/~enhyland/lectures_1-10.htm, http://uccllt.ucdavis.edu/Events/papers/Crane,etal.Irvine2002Paper.htm, http://www.encounters.jp/mike/professional/publications/bevseminar.html and http://langue.hyper.chubu.ac.jp/jalt/pub/tlt/00/jul/gallagher.html clarifies some aspects of genre and it gives us an important view of genre itself. Furthermore, one of the site explains genre in different perspectives: sitemic-funcitional view, ‘ESP’ perspective, ‘New rhetoric’ view. The theme is also explored on “the role of genre within a lireracy-based curriculum’ which is particularly important do clarify genre-approach that is our focus in here because it works with definitions of genre applied pedagogically. The idea of pedagogical use of genre is also stated by Michael Crintchley as important because “a genre-based approach of learning has became standard practice in ESL as well as public school contexts in Australia’. So genre theory is suitable for teaching and learning English for special purposes.
Genre-approach is the way to study and learn using specific texts that reflects a social purpose aimed to recognize and use genre or at least identify genre and its particular structure. The use of the texts of different genres and the practice of its structures with students can lead into the ability to create independent texts for different social contexts. Thus, specific vocabulary and grammar can also be studied within the context itself.
The study of business English then, can use genre-approach to develop the ability of comprehend, use, create texts using specific structures and vocabulary belonging to a business social context. It might be considered such application as an example of use of genre in an spoken mode. The use of text from business magazines to develop English learning in context can be justification for spoken use genre, and as it goes, the structures can be investigated by teachers for grammar discussion class.
