Task 12
Cléber Vieira de Araújo

The activity chosen is designed for intermediate students, from the Gallery by Paula Fassman and Suzanne Seymour Tavares, ed. Oxford, 1982. The activity chosen is meant to make students review/ practice conversation as well as report speech. The students in this English level have already studied the Basic English structures, now the focus is in oral practice as a way to reinforce, review as well as fixing this structures. New grammar points and topics are also presented in this book but the focus is not grammar but communication.

The activity proposed is in the first book chapter. It starts with a suggestive newspaper reading, “ … he tried to rob a bank with a plastic pistol”. Probably planed for a whole class, one hour and thirty minutes. Teacher starts the class with a brief warm up/brain storm asking students about what they expect from the text with this suggestive title adding some vocabulary students probably will need to read/produce their explain about their own rob experience latter.

The class is divided in 4 steps:

.The first class step starts with teacher creating a situation to involve and motivate students to participate and give their own opinions.
. Second step, students read the short article, silent voice.
. Third step, students try to retell the story.
. Forth step, in pairs students perform a dialog. One student will be a reporter and the other will be one of the officers involved in the thief’s arrest.

The activity enables the review and practice, among others, of:
. Interrogative pronouns
. Simple past
. Report speech
. Make/answering questions

In the class structure it can be observed that it creates an adequate ambiance to the students. The subject chosen is adequate, it motivates students to emit their opinion as well as tell the group their own experiences on the subject.

Warm up and the short reading activity motivates students and gives them security and bases to start/ perform the activity teacher expects.

The motivated group performs the interview proposed reviewing the grammar and structure points besides of improving conversation ability and amplifies vocabulary in a natural way.

According to Littlewood the activity may be classified as a social interaction activity
