Subject: Task 12

Activity description:

The activity is “Topics Of Conversation” and it has taken from “Handshake: a course on communication”. The first par t of activity there is a list with a several topics of conversation. The students have to discuss how often they talk about those topics using frequency adverbs. Also they have to suggest two other topics. The topics are listed in a chart and the frequency adverbs are already listed in the book. In the second part, the students have to compare their results to the rest of the class and conclude if there are difference between male preferences and female preferences about the topics.

Classification:

I classify this activity as a “processing information” type. In this type of functional communication activity, “the stimulus for communication comes form the need to discuss and evaluate these facts, in pairs or groups, in order to solve a problem or reach a decision.” (Littlewood, 1981). In the activity described above the students are stimulated to discuss topics of conversation using their knowledge from outside the classroom in a communicative way. The functional aspects is in the use of frequency adverbs. Also, I would say that there is a social functional aspect in this activity when the book asks to the students find differences between boys and girls, in relation to the topics preferences.
