Subject: Task 9

Task 9

A task-based lesson is one which the focus is diverted from the structure of
the language itself onto the performance of a task for which the use of
English is necessary. The studentīs ability to USE the language is developed
out of a real necessity. An example which is not easily reproduced, but I
had the opportunity with private students whom I thought at my own home is
cooking. Each student had to bring a recipe in written in or translated to
English(I suggest that it be limited to no more than 5 ingreedients so as
not to complicate matters). The task then became to prepare the dish while
a partner read the instructions.
By making the language meaningful the activity made in memorable. At the end
there were six different dishes prepared by the three different pairs and
everyone had lots of fun while retaining the vocabulary and the structure
employed (in this instance The Imperative).
The pre-activity (the finding of the recipe) was done without inthusiasm
because they didnīt think they would be able to do the task nor have fun
doing it.
But the accomplisment felt good and the fact that they had immediate
feedback (the dish to eat and the opinion of the partner) was a very
positive aspect of the class.
This same approach can be successfully used playing card games (students
seem to have a preference for Poker and Black-Jack), producing a short music
clip or movie, trying to produce copies of famous works of art, and numerous
other activities which the student or the group may be interested on.
