Task 9

Task-Based Approach

The task-based approach is concerned with teaching a second language through the use of tasks. Those tasks should be challenging but respecting student’s level and difficulties; moreover, the problem-solving activities have to provide varied representations of content, making learning more significant. As a result, teachers should be aware of the tasks they would apply and evaluate not only the difficulty, but also the purpose of those exercises, if they could contribute to students’ development of their communicative competence.

Skehan (1994:191-192) points out that we have a “three-phase approach” to tasks implementation. The pre-task stage is when the teacher presents the topic and uses similar tasks to make the ‘main’ activity clearer. Furthermore, students should have in mind the required structures/vocabulary they will need to fulfill the task. The material used can be authentic or non-authentic.

In during-task stage, the teacher observes students and gives them a comfortable time limit for completing the task and it should be calculated taking into account the number of students involved, length of a text and the kind of feedback asked. The teacher should tell students that they can worry about accuracy and syntax, but they cannot forget to make their speech meaningful and fluent.

In the post-task stage, the task is examined and the teacher gives his/her feedback about it. The results students reached are usually present to the entire class, so they can have access to different results.

The task-based syllabus is organized as a sequence of tasks which will gradually increase their level of difficulty and complexity, making students able to enlarge their knowledge in a L2 progressively.
