Subject: Task 9

Explain with your own words what a task-based language learning approach is.

Most of the times it is possible to combine different areas of the curriculum by teaching them in an integrated way. Based on both students’ realities and backgrounds, this way of teaching has proven to be more effective since students learn the subject naturally (the foreign language in this case). It also offers a more realistic use of the language and can, therefore, have a positive effect on students’ motivation to learn the language.
In the task-based approach students have to perform a certain task or solve a certain problem and by doing these activities they learn language. The idea is to focuss on the task and not on the language structure. For example, the teacher activates students' background knowledge by introducing the topic and task(this includes useful words and phrases),and makes sure students understand the intructions by means of exemplification, for instance. This is what is called Pre-task by Willis. Then, students are supposed to work in pairs and later report their work to the restof the class. The teacher does not interfere, just to monitors. This stage is called Task cycle. the last stage is the Language focus where students analyse and practice specific language features of the task.
Tha task-based approach is much used in language teaching, but it doesn't work well by itself, rather it works better together with the communicative approach. It is actually part of the communicative approach.
