Tenth Task
Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.
Lexical approach consists to present the language to learners through words and word combinations. We use chunks or sentence frames to give to learners a whole comprehension about how language is used in speech, and instead we teach learners the meanings of each word, a whole notion of the phrase or chunk meanings is given to them. Through the lexical approach students of ESL will use words and word combinations to store in their mental lexicons.
According to Olga Moudraia, we can use the following activities to develop learner's knowledge of lexical chains:
- Intensive and extensive listening and reading in the target language;
- First and second language comparisons and translation - carried out chunk-for-chunk, rather than word-for-word - aimed at raising language awareness,
- Repetition and recycling of activities, such as summarizing a text orally one day and again a few days later to keep words and expressions that have been learned active,
- Guessing the meaning of vocabulary items from context,
- Noticing and recording language patterns and collocations,
- Working with dictionaries and other reference tools,
- Working with language corpuses created by the teacher for use in the classroom or accessible on the Internet.
According to Lewis the following taxonomy of lexical items is suggested:
- words
- polywords
- collocations, or word patnerships
- institutionalised utterances
- sentence frames and heads.
