TASK 10

The concept that Language consists of grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalised
grammar may appear obvious but it’s of the utmost importance. The constant
acquisition of new vocabulary is fundamental. However, this must not be
confused with memorization of definitions, not be limited to words.
Vocabulary or lexis must be seen as meaningful chunks of language be it a
single word or a combination of them which carries a meaning.
In the Communicative Approach this can be easily accomplished by the
creation of situations. A person acquires new lexis when he can identify it
with reality, or with something he knows or is familiar with. Relating the
unknown to something known facilitates leanings. Foreigners who come to
Brazil without any knowledge of Portuguese may acquire such words as
saudade, feijoada, cachaça, and sei lá through real-life experiences with
the language. These examples are not merely expressions or words but
concepts; and they do not exist in other languages, but foreigners easily
learn them while in Brazil because they live them. Leaning lexis in the
Communicative Approach should approximate these experiences as much as
possible and the use of the Lexical Approach can go hand in hand with that.
Students may easily grasp the correct use of by the way, on the other hand,
nowadays, see you later, take it easy, what’s up, and many more, if the
situation created by the teacher seems real enough. Soon, as they begin to
perceive these chunks as patterns of the language they begin using them in
different contexts. After all, this is how people learn their own language.
