Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

The idea of the language consisting “of grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalised grammar"(Michael Lewis 1993) is the most important thing in the Lexical Approach. But words themselves should not be considered as important as their meanings, for example the memorization of their definitions. Through meanings themselves in words or in chunks of words the new vocabulary should be taught. Students must always be able to relate the new vocabulary to their own experience. In loco or in a Role Play - as close as possible to reality - students should identify the situation in order to acquire the new lexis. By doing that in the Communicative Approach, the Lexis Approach seems to be very interesting since once the students understand some chunks of language, the next natural step is to produce them in whatever context.
