Task 7
I would say that Karlys Wells lesson plan “Buy a car” is a fine activity and its organization has a lot to do with some communicative approach principles pointed out by Ryan. It seems to be “meaningful, practical and fun for students” and also follows steps or phases previously planned; in other words, it has a framework. Furthermore, students are encouraged to develop autonomy, to research and make decision by themselves.
Although the project has its positive aspects, negative ones can also be found. As for feedback, I think that it should not be left to the end. Students should be evaluated throughout the process, not only taking into account a final summary. Concerning goals, the teacher should clarify them to students right in the beginning. If learners are supposed to develop certain skills and acquire new vocabulary related to cars, the teacher should let them know.
Talking about cultural awareness, I think that the topic chosen by Wells cannot be applied in any classroom context. It will depend a lot on teachers and student’s reality, on their experiences. For example, I myself had access to internet and other technologies just after entering the college. Internet research for a state student like me was unthinkable. Moreover, maybe talking about cars is not an interesting topic for all students. As a teacher, I have to say that I would not feel comfortable to work with the project in question. I am not devoted to cars and I just know a few basic thing about the subject. Therefore, we can think of some question: Will this new knowledge be useful to students? In wich way (s)? Is it really meaningful, something part of student’s reality?
In conclusion, I think that Wells’ project is good, however teachers should try to make modifications/adaptations to adequated it to their students’ needs and social context.
