Subject: Task14

Task 14 – Say how we can test communicative competence.

Although Dell Hymes’ arguments are not so recent, they are up to date, and so, it is hard to disagree with him. If we intend to test communicative competence, I think that we must avoid testing of knowledge about vocabulary and grammar rules. Moreover, we must be as close as possible to real life situations and give priority to appropriateness of the utterances to the context. It is not easy to know a great amount of vocabulary and grammar rules, but more difficult is to produce sensible communicative interaction before some texts and reply to them in a judicious way.
