Subject: Task 15

Task 15 – How can we use portfolios to evaluate student’s progress?

Portfolio is a work collection, that is, portfolio involves particularly several works made by only one person during a course time. Logically, every work has to do with the others because they treat the same topic. Analysing the works presented in a portfolio, a teacher can see the progress in writing quality from work to work and evaluate the student through his/her written works. Moreover, beyond being an assessment tool, the works presented in the portfolio may be used as support for the next work. According to Sweet (1993) some “educators believe that portfolio assessments are more effective than “old style” for measuring academic skills and informing instructional decision” . I agree with him because I see something of active in doing a portfolio, particularly the text production action, which makes students think, research and write in order to product their own text. In conclusion, each work in a portfolio is a support for the next one, and the complete collection shows the student performance along a course.
