TASK 13

Create a good communication activity and describe it to your classmates. Say, which type it is, according to Littlewood.

THEME: Politics
LEVEL: Basic
LANGUAGE FOCUS: identify and practice oral speech structures by using simple present tense

1. Warm –up: write the words politics and politician on the board.
2. Teach the differences between “politics” and “politician” on the board
3. The teacher puts politicians pictures on the board and tells the students:
‘Look at the pictures and answer: Who is he / she?
They’ll answer: He is Lula, She is Heloisa Helena…
4. Give them little posters containing the positions. Ask them to match pictures and positions
Example: José de Alencar … …is the vice president of Brazil.
… is the president of the United States.
… is the president of Brazil.
… is a senator
5. Writing activity: In pairs, give them the pictures of a politicians and an adjective list. Ask them to write the characteristics of the politicians they got using the adjective list.
Example: George W. Bush He is arrogant.
He is rich.
He is stupid.
6. Extra Activity: Students are going to play candidates. Before that, they are going to make campaign posters. They cannot forget:
Name
Position
Number
Party
At least three qualities
Slogan
Speaking: After they are done, students are supposed to show poster and make a candidate speech based on what they wrote.
This activity provides the use of language of a functional communicative activity that Littlewood explains. Students allow natural learning and they can create a context which supports learning.
