Task #13
By Ana Paula Menezes Lima

Material Development

First of all, I would like to say that I'm not sure if the task is 100% original. After so many years of English classes and communicative activities, it is hard to know if I got influenced by any of them. Anyway, it is original in the sense that I did not copy from my classmates!

The aim of the activity is to exchange information with a partner. The student will have to retell something he/she heard. It is a functional acitivity, which means that the goal of the activity is that the student pass the information, no matter how or if he/she is using adequate vocabulary or accuracy.
It is probably an activity for Intermediate students.

The first step is to divide the class in two groups. Then the teacher explains what the activity is going to be about. One group leaves the classroom and the teacher plays a tape with a story for them to listen. It is important that the tape is not too long or with so many details, because the students will have to remember it later to retell the others. The teachers play the tape twice and the calls the students who were out to join the classroom again. The students who listened the tape choose oe of those who did not listen to the story and in five minutes, tell what they have heard. The ones who listened the story from a classmate have to write a summary about what they were told. Another option is for the teacher do the same process but now changing the groups. And as a plus, this activity can be done not only with an audio tape, but with video, photographs and images. The important is the way the students give the information they received.
