BINGO-JOBS: game

INSTRUCTIONS:

In this activity, the main learning focus for the beginners is to listen to the names of jobs so that the English words become familiar, and the students begin to notice features in English.

Each student chooses six jobs pictures, and put the other pictures back in the envelope. The teacher says the names of jobs at random. When a student hears one of his/her job names, she or he turns that picture over. The first one with all the pictures turned over must shout “BINGO!” and is the winner.

Note: Before doing this activity, the teacher already must have presented students names of jobs in English.

This activity is designed mainly for basic level, and probably may work very well with teenagers or children. The purpose here is to teach the specific vocabulary (names of jobs). They have to identify jobs through pictures that show someone’s using clothes and/or equipment. With this material teachers can present them other kind of vocabulary such as places where these people work, clothing, and equipments.

According to Littlewood, this game activity can be considered a functional communication activity, because students are required to attempt to choose language which is appropriate (when they hear the word and process its meaning). Like Littlewood said, the main purpose of this activity is that learners should use the language they know in order to get meaning across as effectively as possible. This is a really simple, but very effective communicative activity for vocabulary reinforcement, because I already did it; and in fact it worked.
