14th class – Testing Communicative Competence

Task – How we can test communicative competence

As Kathleen and Kenji have pointed out in their article, testing communicative competence does not concern only with test knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Testing communicative competence means to test if the language has been used appropriately in real situation. They also state that the tests have to evaluate what the students have been studying. So, the tests have to be carefully prepared in order to reflect correctly the performance of the students concerning the contents into specific purpose.
According to Kathleen and Kenji, as there are no wrong and right answers in real life situations, the results of the evaluation will depend on band scales well-prepared in order to provide a context in which the testees can share information.
A good way to test the communicative competence, as Kathleen and Kinji have pointed out, is to use communicative test tasks. One of these talks concerns with speaking/listening. This type of task consists of two or more testees working together in which each of them receive certain information but also lacking some information in order that they can share information by asking for and giving. Another test task mentioned by Kathleen and Kenji is reading and writing. In this task, the testees receive instruction to write a letter, memo, summary in order to answer certain questions concerning information that they have received.
In summary, testing communicative competence has to reflect the social communicative use of the language. Besides, it has to be directed toward what has been taught to the students throughout the course.
