Subject: Task # 10

10th TASK:
Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

The lexical approach can be summarized in a few words: language consists not of traditional grammar and vocabulary but often of multi-word prefabricated chunks.
Teachers using the lexical Approach will not analyze the target language in the classroom, but will be more inclined to concentrate learners’ attention upon these chunks.
Language consists not of traditional grammar and vocabulary but often of multi-word prefabricated chunks, Lewis, 1997. Lewis proposed that fluency is the result of the acquisition of a large store of fixed and semi-fixed prefabricated items which available as the foundation for any linguistic novelty or creativity. Lexical Approach does not concentrate on syntax and tense used but on words combination, which are generative in a different way from traditional grammar.
Typical activities include asking students to add intensifiers to same fixed expressions. Lewis suggested that exposure to enough suitable input, not formal teaching, is the key to increasing the learners lexicon, and that most vocabulary is acquired, not taught
The guiding principles of the Lexical Approach are:
. The grammar /vocabulary dichotomy is invalid
. Collocation is used as an organized principle
. Successful language is a wider concept than accurate language
. The Observe-Hypothesize-Experiment cycle replaces the Present-Practice-Produce-Paradigm
. Most importantly, language consists of Grammaticalised-Lexis, not Lexicalized-Grammar
