Explain what a genre-based approach is.

Genre-based approach is based on reading, or rather having students to work with texts selected from one specific area of content. This approach has its focus on the text and not on the sentences or grammar structures.
Some times we do not understand the reasons why some writers use this or that kind of structure in order to express his/her idea. By using this approach, students can better understand the reasons and the kind of structure that is most suitable for each genre.
But, in my opinion this approach will not be that useful to work with students with a low level of knowledge in English language because, for sure, it demands some understanding of the language in order to be able to read the presented texts. On the other hand, when working with students from the Intermediate level on, this approach will be very profitable in that students will be in touch with materials that can show them many ways to say this and that, and it will also make them aware what is the most suitable or acceptable way to express his/her thinks in this or that genre of text.
I myself have studied in this method – although at that time I could not understand this – when my English teachers used to present me (and all the class!) some messages left on telephone answer machine and after reading and analyzing them we were suppose to produce our own messages. This really worked and we did were able to produce very good jobs.
