TASK 13

Create a good communication activity and describe it to your classmates.
Say which type it is, according to Littlewood.

Communication activity: What’s the country ?

Level: intermediate

Student A is about to take a business trip to a foreign country, and Student B is a travel agent.
The traveler asks the agent for information about the country he or she is going to visit.
Students reverse roles in part 2.
Put the students in pairs. Encourage them to give each other the information in their own words.
They should wait until their partner asks them a question, then answer their partner’s questions.
Tell students to choose a country they know about or one they would like to learn about.
Tell them to do research on that country outside of class. They should find out about the weather in the country all year round and any other information that interests them, like what people wear there, what they eat, what kind of sports they like. They can get this information from an encyclopedia, from internet or from travel books of the country they are interested in.
They should do this activity in English and at home.
After students get their information, put them in pairs and tell them to try and guess what their partner’s country is. They can ask about the weather in the country at differents times of year, what kind of clothes people wear there, what they eat, what kinds of sports they like, where the country is

According to Littlewood, this is a functional communication activity, because the learners have to solve a problem with real conversation and using an information gap.
This activity belongs to “Discovering secrets”, in which one student has a piece of secret information and the other must discover by asking appropriate questions.
