TASK 12
ADAO FERNANDES

Examine one textbook and choose a good communicative activity. Describe it and then classify that activity according to the types presented by Littlewood.

I found a very interesting for starters students. The activity chosen to be described and classified was taken from Joanne Collie’s “Double Take Listening and Speaking ”, Oxford, page 30.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:

FIRST STEP: Students have to listen to a news report; and number the pictures to show the right order. The activity brings 5 pictures in complete nonsense order.

SECOND STEP: After putting the pictures in the right order according to the listening, students have to create a new and logical order trying create a different news report.

ACTIVITY CLASSIFICATION:

In my opinion this activity has a main goal of communication. According to the types of communicative activities presented by Littlewood (1981: 32-33), this activity could be classified as a “sharing and processing information activity”, but in this case it is for to share factual information, since this kind of activity provide pictures sequences. This activity emphasizes the functional aspect of communication, because involves students discussion about the information given through the listening.

Some of this kind of activity are funny or tell a little tale (as in the case of the activity chosen, a news report), others are straightforward descriptions of everyday life. Both sorts make a useful starter activity, which students offering vocabulary items or complex sentences about what is taking place. The story can be used later for tasks as simple as sequencing the cut-up frames.

Besides the aspects already mentioned, this activity provides opportunities to use criativity for students environment supporting them with motivation and individual autonomy in their efforts to practice and learn the target language.
