TASK 13

Communicative Language Teaching

1) Create a good communicative activity and describe it to your classmates. Say which type it is according to Littlewood

Littlewood, W. Communicative language teaching. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1981.p. 16 to 46.


Second Littlewood (1981), “The principle underlying functional communication activies is that the teacher structures the situation so that learners to overcome na information gap or solve a problem.” Considering this argument, and the differents Littlewood’s categories, we choose work with the “sharing information with restrictes cooperation”.(...) “The situation is always that one learner (or group) possesses informations wich another learner (or group) must dicovered.” Littlewood. p, 22.
The activity name is: You are the actor ?
Level – 1 or 2
The proposed: The teacher proposes, in the classroom, a “research secret”. The learner must find informations about a “vip”, famous or important people (artists, actors, singers, sculptors, politics...). The student will be free to choose his favourite celebrated. After the “research secret”, like a play, the “learner will be the actor”. So, he / or she will be interviewed by his friends class. The identity must go on in secret, and the others learners have to dicover who are the secret famous person. Questions must be elaborated. The teacher is the helper. phrases and expressions like: What do you do? What’s your favourite ... ? Do you like a/an ... ? How old your age ? Where are you from ? What do you like to do... ? What’s your favourite hobby?... Do you have a boy or girlfriend? The questions can be about the family, job, relationships, behavior, etc. When the learners discovered the secret personality. The “actor student”, with the class, and the teacher, will can talk about curiosities, interesting facts about the personality discovered.

- The activity will make possible the real communication among the learners / “(...) Communicative activity provides opportunities for positive personal relationships to develop among learners and between learners and teacher.” Littlewood, p.18
- The learners who are responsable by activity propoused “(...) the learners themselves who are responsible for conducting the interaction to its coclusion” Littlewood, p.18
- The teacher is the intermediator and the helper. “(...) the teacher can offer advice or provide necessary language items.” Littlewood, p.19

I believe that this exercise can be considered like a “Functional commincation activity”. The first kind is “Sharing information with restricted cooperation”, and the subkind is “Discovering ‘secret’”.

Research about a celebrated vip, and in the next class “You are the artist”
You’ll be interviewed by yours friends class!

MY ANSWER

The first kind is “Sharing information with restricted cooperation”, and the subkind is “Discovering missing information”.

“- Textbook – Double Take One
- Communicative activity – Unit 2B – “Show me round” / Page 15 – no. 04
- About the activity proposed – With a partner, or group, the learners must find differents places on the map proposed. However, the informations are fragmented and dispersed. It’s a defiance, “a problem”, that in the end will be solved with a “listen” help, when, Peter, a tour guide, in a interview, talk about the places and diverses attractions.(...)”
