Discovering an appointment

The teacher hangs a big chart on the wall with days of the week on the horizontal and the name of the students on the vertical, as follows:

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
Student A
Student B
Student C

One student is called at a time to check one space with an “X” for one appointment he/she has during that week. He will not tell the others what the appointment is about.
The other students should find out what appointment it is by asking questions, as:
· What time is your appointment?
· Who are you going with?
· How are you going to get there?
· Is it far from your house?
· How often do you go there?

After they find out, one student should retell all the informations that were given, like: “Student A is going to the dentist at 8:00 am next Friday. He is going with his mother. His dentist is near Liberty Square and he is going by car. It is not far from his house. He goes to the dentist twice a year.”

This activity has the purpose of practicing the structure going to as near future and also to practice the simple present tense. The stimulus for communication comes from the need to find out a missing message. According to Littlewood (1981), this is a functional communicative activity sharing information with restricted cooperation that produces interaction.
