TASK 09- ADAO FERNANDEZ
TASK BASED APPROACH

The essential aspect of the Task Based Approach is that learners were focused on the meaning of content rather than form, concentrated more on the task, being related to the real needs of learners. Instead of a language structures, students are presented with a task, they have to perform or solve a problem. Only when the task has been completed does the teacher discusses the language that was used, making corrections and adjustments. Crookes (1992: 27) points out that Task Based Approaches to language teaching are distinguishable from earlier approaches because “part of their rationale derives from what is known about human learning in general and/or second language learning in particular”.

The classroom tasks involve negotiation of meaning and must be used to facilitate practice of both language forms and communicative functions. The goals and outcomes of tasks were to relate to the real needs of learners, such as buying cinema tickets, to locate real-ness in outcome. Teacher can use activities like solve a problem, do a puzzle, play a game or share and compare experience. However, teachers must choose interesting and motivating activities because, during the process of learning, learners can create conditions to themselves in which they can get confused. According to WILLIS(1996) task activities in a ESL classroom must have :

coherence and unity for learners;
meaning and purpose for learners;
have clear language learning goals;
involve the learners actively, encouraging students to communicate one each other

Like the communicative approach, Task Based Approach offers real learning benefits, though neither tasks nor communicative activities on their own are sufficient for a whole language program. Both are very efficient, but teacher have an essential role in the two approaches, he must be organizer, enabling students to organize better all information done during the activity and develop thinking and abilities.
