Subject: Task 9

Explain with your own words what a task-based learning approach is.

Krashen suggests that a foreign language learning process will present a better result when students are involved in such a ‘real use of the language’, or in other words, the students should learn a foreign language the same way they learn their mother tongue. That is to say that in real life, we learn language by using it in our day-by-day activities or in many different situations; the communication problems that appears every time around us in our life force us to use language and, by doing acting like this, I mean facing the communication problems that are presented to us we go on developing our competency and gaining experience.
The Task-based approach has its bases on this. This approach leads the students to work on tasks, which can be compared with the problems of day-by-day life, and the students have to make researches, have to communicate among themselves or with some outside person in order to obtain information to deal with their proposed task. These proposed tasks can have many different characteristics such as play a game, perform an interview among others.
The teacher in this approach will act as a mediator and he/she will just help the students when they need this help.
