task 5 -
After reading the two texts I would like point out some ideas which ones I think that is very important in the process of acquiring a language .
I agree with Vera Menezes when she says that although it is possible to theorize about the existence of some generalizations in acquisition, everyone has their own individual characteristics , making it impossible to describe all the possibilities of this phenomenon. Each person has his/her necessities in order to learn anything, not only a second language. As we are dealing with it, the acquisition of a second language is quite complex and there is not a rule to follow as : If you do this, you´re going to learn everything, but if you don't do that you´re going to fail... It doesn´t exist. A acquisition of a second language is not a linear process and it should be done , if possible, with creativity combining with a social interaction to influence the learning of new words and also the improvement of grammar. As teachers we should be aware that each student is different from the other and each one has a specific necessity and/or difficulty.
According to Stephen Krashen, ‘learning’ is less important than ‘acquisition’. The acquisition of a language is got through interaction, natural communication, when the speakers are not interested in the linguistic rules, but in the communicative act. I also agree with him and I have always thought that the great importance in the being able to speak a second language, is the possibility to understand other speakers and also be understood. Finally, I could say that if someone wants to learn a second language he/she should find opportunities to talk to native speakers, to travel abroad, to take risks... and don´t be afraid to commit errors. Everything is welcome when someone really wants to improve any ability.
