TASK 5

KRASHEN’S INPUT HYPOTHESIS AND THE FRACTAL MODEL OF LANGUAGE AQUISITION - HOW LANGUAGE IS ACQUIRED

In the input hypothesis of krashen’s theory , he states the concept idea of i+1 where i re-presents the “distance between actual language development” and i + 1 “the potential lan-guage development”. For him, language is not learned; it is acquired when the learner is ready concerning development and maturity.

By comparing Krashen’s input hypothesis and the Fractal Model of Language Acquisition (Vera Lúcia Menezes), I gathered that the latter exposes a much wider view of the aspects that involve language acquisition, especially when acquisition of foreign language and se-cond language are concerned.

Although both defend that language is acquired, the Fractal Model of Language Acquisition is closer to the idea of systematizing such process once it points out the various factors that influence and determine the acquisition of a language as well as it shows which aspects should be thought of when dealing with language acquisition.

I also believe that language is acquired and that it can’t be treated alone as a sole ability. As mentioned by Vera Menezes in the Fractal Model of Language Acquisition, it is a complex and unpredictable process and, in my opinion, this is due to the complexity of the subject’s nature in this process – that is – the learner.

First of all, in order to acquire new information, the person must want it and be cognitively ready to receive it. Besides, the input should come in a comprehensible code, so that it can be “digested” by whoever is there to learn. But, this is not enough. It’s necessary that the learner brings along (consciously or not) information and socio-cultural experiences which will certainly be essential to establish the rhythm of his language acquisition process.

Thirdly and along with all the aspects mentioned above, there is the amount of exposure and contact the learner has with the language ( including interaction with more competent speakers and native ones).

Next and maybe the least strong factor in language acquisition I would place the method applied once most of this process depends on the learner’s individual characteristics and motivation to speak the acquired language. But if the method takes for granted all these factors mentioned in the Fractal Model of Language Acquisition, it is more likely to have better results concerning time and proficiency by the learners in the acquisition of a langua-ge.
