Subject: Task #5

5th TASK:
Read the text FRACTAL MODEL OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION and get more information about “the input hypothesis” by reading more about Krashen’s theory.
Compare the two texts and give your own opinion about how language is acquired.

According to Krashen, S., an applied linguist from University of Southern California, language acquisition consists of five main hypothesis: the acquisition learning hypothesis, the monitor hypothesis, the natural order hypothesis, the input hypothesis and the affective filter hypothesis.
The input hypothesis is only concerned to acquisition not learning. According to this hypothesis, the learner improves and progresses along the natural order when he or she receives second language input that is one step beyond his or her current stage of linguistic competence. Since not all of the learners can be at the same level of linguistic competence at the same time, Krashen suggests that natural communicative input is the key to designing a syllabus ensuring in this way that each learner will receive appropriate input for his or her current stage of linguistic competence.
In Professor Vera Menezes’ article, the main idea is that learning is a complex system, and non-linear process, not predictable, as many models of acquisition have hypothesized. She introduces a model, the fractal model, a complex dynamic system, composed of sub-systems equally complex and dynamic, to explain language acquisition.
In her opinion depending on the connections among the various subsystems, success in the process of acquisition could vary as much in FL contexts as in L2.That´s why we can see FL learning situations experiencing great success, and L2 situations much less successful, depending on the set of connections that are created, or that fail to be created.
In my opinion, the fractal model is more complete and holistic, it presents that learning is complex and full of unlimited combinations. Anyway, Krashen’s model is respectable and only tries to explain part of the language acquisition process.
It does not mean one article goes against each other, but it does mean that Professor Vera Menezes’s idea of language acquisition process is much more complete.
