Subject: TASK 5

Task 5 - compare the two texts and give your own opinion about how language is acquired.

Beginning with the text “Fractal Model of Language Acquisition” , by Vera Menezes, she defend s that the process of acquire a L2 is something much more complex than Krashen’s theory describes. In the Fractal Model the L2 process involves several fragmented parts, as part of a whole. In addition, the Fractal Model consider the students personal differences as very important in a process of acquire a new language. Differently from Krashen’s theory, which consider only its one as model of language acquisition; Fractal Model takes many theories as relevant to learning of a second language. Such theories are, just to exemplify: behaviourist, Krashen’s theory, Hatch’s , Swain’s and Shumann’s theories. The main reason for considering not only one theory, as Krashen do, is that language learning is a non-linear process, so it is not predicable because it has many factors involved (social context, motivation, input, etc.). It seems that for language acquisition only one theory is not enough to fill all the needs in which it has been involved. Language acquisition is based on not only one theory, but in many of them. Each particular situation will request one of them depending on the context and other factors such as motivation, social context, and so forth, and I believe that is not possible to achieve everything through only one theory.
Concluding, what the two texts proposed are very different, while Krashen believes that the process of learning a second language is a linear process, so it can be predictable and generalized, Vera considers the same as a complex process, not generalized, concerned with individuality, formed by fragments that will be part of a whole. I agree with Menezes’ point of view because language itself is complex, dynamic and non-linear, and it demands a non simplified approach.
