Communicative Approach

Student: Aparecida dos Santos Sila

DESCRIBE THE DESIGN OF PROTOTYPICAL COMMUNICATIVE COURSE

The main goal of a communicative course is to provide students a plentiful exposure to language in use for the development of knowlegde and skills.

This is possible when the activities are based on realistic communication, such as role-plays, simulations, construction of a story, writing a poem, solving a puzzle, etc. These activities are known as task-based materials and realia.

For the success of these activities, it is necessary the desire to communicate something with a purpose. So, the activities must be interesting and focused on the content rather than on form.

The materials used will not dictated what specific language forms the students should use. They should use a variety of language than just one language structure.

According to Breen and Candlin, the teacher has two main roles. First, is to facilitate communication and second, is to act as an idependent participant whithin the learning-teaching group. The other roles are: needs analyst, counselour and group process manager.

Students of a communicative course has no specific role, they are supposed to be highly motivated to communicate. In a such approach they have opportunities to express their feelings and their individualities. In this process their are considered communicators.
