7th TASK- THE CLASSROOM

ANALYSE THE FOLLOWING LESSON PLAN, BUY A CAR BY KARLS WELLS, HAVING RYAN’S TEXT, OVERCOMING COMMON PROBLEMS RELATED TO COMMUNICATIVE METHODOLOGY, AS REFERENCE.

One of the goal of this lesson is likely to make the learners acquire some sort of vocabulary related to cars in relation with the context of real situation of buying. Besides, it aims to make the learners get a ‘stormbrain’ corcerning to making decision into a specific situation. So, teacher’s feedback may be seen as one of the most important role in this learning. As Ryan states in his article ‘overcoming commom problems related to communicative methodology’, learners are supposed to receive feedback concerning to their learning throughout the course. In other words, in this lesson, teacher is supposed to help and support his/her learners with their difficults, problems, doubts, and so forth, not only with the vocabulary that they are dealing with, but also support them to use these vocabularies into specific context such as this one.
According to to ‘consistency in teaching style’ presented by Ryan in the same, teachers have to try to balance their style of teaching, that is, being demanding and at the same time flexible with the students. It means that, concerning to this lesson, the teacher is supposed to take into account not learners’s vocabulary learning as something separatly or isolated, but as something associated to the context in which they are invonved in such as ‘car buy’, for instance. Thus, they will learn not only words and expresssions related to cars, but how to apply them by making and researching.
Another important point which must be taken into account in this lesson is that the teacher is supposed make clear to the learners that most of decision-making will be based on their own motivation. By doing that the teacher will make the learners get more involved in the lesson – they can feel confortable to give their opinions, they get ready to the lesson itself whereas this will fit in as ‘warm-up’. So, as Ryan has pointed out, teachers must create conditions that adapt the lesson to the learners’s personalities in order to make them involved in it as well as make the activity more effective.
In terms of routine, it seems that this lesson the first phase, researching, is to be used as way to make the learners start to get involved in the activity, that is, to prepare them (‘warm-up’) by researching words related to the topic and their personalities (motivations which led them to choose that car item or categories, for instance) before framing into the context. The last two phases, decision-making and sharing, would be the practical part of the lesson routine: framing the words or expressions related to the topic ( car itens, categories, etc.) into the context by researching, making decision, sharing opinions with the group, receiving feedback by the teacher and at last writting a summary about the topic as a whole.
In summary, the teacher’s role in this activity is to make clear what he/she wants the learners do through a frame, trying to have as much as possible to have a friend-coacha relationship without troubling the learning process itself. The teacher is supposed to view the learning as whole and not as parts isolated from each other. So, teacher have to consider learners’s researching, decision-making and sharing as part of one whole: making the learner achieve a specific vocabulary and apply them into specific context of a day-to-day situation. Teacher has also to be awaress of the different reaction that the learnes may have during the classes. For instance, because of cultural aspects some learners may not get so involved in this lesson. So, as way to overcome that, teachers must adapt the lesson to the learners’s personalities.
