Subject: Task 7

Analyze the following lesson plan having Ryan's text as reference. http://www.lessonplanspage.com/OConsumerEdBuyCar912.htm

According to Ryan, when planning a lesson or a curriculum, teachers keep in mind if it is “meaningful, practical and, yes, even fun for our students”. I think the lesson “buy a car” considers all these things, it is very creative and funny. Ryan also claims that we have to overcome some
problems related to communicative methodology, for instance, it is important to provide feedback to students throughout the course not in a single final test, otherwise it can result in less motivation and interest. In the lesson “buy a car”, feedback is done in the last phase, when they write a summary of their work. Feedback should be part of the routine of the lesson as Ryan mentioned. This routine must have: warm-up, presentation, controlled practice, free practice and feedback. It makes the students feel confident about the language and comfortable to commit mistakes.
In Weels’s lesson, the warm-up is the brainstorm. This elicit the background knowledge of the students and prepare them for the subject. The presentation is the research about the factors that appears in the warm-up. Controlled practice is in certain the phase when they create and
complete the spreadsheet. In this phase they feel more secure about the subject and prepare themselves for free practice, when they compare each other’s choice. Another important thing to consider is the goal of the lesson, which has to be clear to students such as in Weels’s lesson
plan. Weels did not tells the students what structure they are supposed to use, but they know they have to research to answer some questions, for example, “what general factors enter into a buying decision about a vehicle? How can resources and a decision grid be used to make choices about
a specific set of vehicles?” and buy a car. This is what happens in real life, we have some goals and we communicate to achieve them.
In conclusion, I think this lesson is quite interesting and creative. The students are required to use the four skills: listening and speaking (when they compare their choice), reading and writing, using an interesting subject and having a goal. Besides, they are dealing with internet what increases their motivation and makes them more autonomy. However, speaking could also be evaluated, including a role play of someone buying a car. In this way, the teacher could give a more complete feedback.
