TASK 15

We can say that the 90’s have been a decade of questioning the traditional assessment in educational systems. This fact has motivated researchers of the area into studying new ways to test and evaluate students’performances in all fields. The idea to use portfolio assessment came up with these new tools of evaluation.

Portfolio assessment is an ongoing process involving the student and teacher in selecting samples of student work for inclusion in a collection, the main purpose of which is to show the student’s progress. It can be a folder containing the student’s works, tasks, compositinos, tapes of oral performances and so on. These would serve as a reference for the teacher and the student, in a way that he could think over his performance and improve his skills.

Portfolios are useful as a support to the new instructional approaches
that emphasize the student’s role in constructing understanding and the
teacher’s role in promoting understanding....They can also be used to
support cooperative teaming by offering an oppportunity for students
to share and comment on each other’s work.

In order to work with portfolio assessment, the and the students have to define what should be kept in the portfolio, by choosing the kinds of work that may be important in a self-evaluation. The student must ask himself questions such as What would I like to reread?; What would I like to show my family and friends? Which tasks may be useful in future works? Which skills demand more from me at the point that I would like to see my progress concretely?. The teacher should also ask some questions like: Which tasks are priority in my work with the students? Which ones could give me a clear idea on how well my student is performing?

As soon as teacher and student decide on what should be filed, they ought to have frequent meetings in order to review the portfolio tasks and evaluate their progress.

A portfolio is also useful to inform the teacher about the aspects he should emphasize in his classes so that he can help students improve their performances.

This kind of evaluation will demand a lot of work from teachers, students and the school administration but the results can be greater. Therefore it is worthwhile trying.
