How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students’ progress ?

Since portfolios are a collection of work developed through the course, I believe that if we take a careful look at the works since the very beginning, we will be able to see in which areas the students have developed and in which areas the progress is not enough yet.
I myself have had a course in which the teacher asked us to produce a portfolio. At that time, the teacher corrected some points in my work which I couldn’t comprehend – even after he detailed explain them to me -, but now, when I take the portfolio I can clearly understand the correction, so the portfolio can provide a good result even after some time.
According to point of evaluating our students’ progress, I do believe that portfolios provide a good way to test it, in that the portfolios do not show only one specific moment but all the process of leaning.
