Subject: Worcester Event

Well it was sure different being at the PBR event in Worcester, Mass without snow or ice! Don't know who's idea it was to move it to May but it makes sense to us. Even with a little rain it was still so much nicer.

As always, it was a great event. The short go had such great bulls that I knew it was either going to be like last year (I think 10 or 11 rides in the 90's) or that there would be few rides. Unfortunately the bulls won out overall but the 4 rides were all 90+. Nice to see Chris Shivers get a win. And he did it by picking a bull that flipped back on top of Marchi in the chutes Saturday. That was a scary few seconds but Marchi jumped up and said bring him back and then rode him like the champ he is. I sure wouldn't bet against him being the first to repeat as world champ.

Got to the meet and greet on Sat morning and it wasn't very crowded so we got time to talk to quite a few riders. A few guys are really sore but aren't making any excuses or taking time off. It's been a long season so far and you can see the wear and tear on the guys. I reminded Dusty LaBeth about a few years ago when he ruined a pair of boots in the snow. He agreed that this time of year is much better to come out this way.

Also the PBR is doing some new thing, at some events, where Fan Club members can get into the arena early and go down by the dirt to meet up with a couple of riders before the event. I guess this event was only the 2nd time they did it so it wasn't quite organized as good as it could have been but I'm sure it will get better. On Friday we got to talk with Adriano, Dustin Elliot and JB. Sat ended up with no riders around. On Sunday Beau Hill, Rocky McDonald, and Nick Landreau came around. Of course Suzan thinks of Nick as "My little Nicky" so it was good to get a chance to visit with him for awhile. He kept telling us that he needed to "get a check" and we were happy to see him take 5th place. This new idea from the PBR also allows the Club members to go onto the arena area after the event to supposdly meet up with the riders for autographs, etc., but by the time you are able to make your way down to the dirt, most of the riders have already gone around the arena and were back in the locker room. I don't blame the riders and I just think that this whole idea needs a little 'tweaking' to make it work. I'm sure if the PBR keeps trying they will get it right.

I was a little surprised by the turnout. I know that everything is hurting these days and I'm thinking that even these events are going to feel it. Friday attendance was probably the lowest I've ever seen there in the 10+ years we've been going. Saturday was not a sellout and Sunday was decent but lower than I have seen recently. I know it's difficult and some of the people I talked to said that they cut back to either going just one or two instead of all 3 days. Hopefully it's just a sign of the hard times now and will change again. I know that between the 3 days, 6 tickets, 2 nights hotel, food, etc., it is not a cheap weekend for us. Glad that they come here but I really wouldn't mind if it was a 2 day event.

Anyway, good time and some great rides. J.W. Hart did the roping during the 1st half of Friday and that in itself was alot of fun. One bull, Skinny, must have taken 10 minutes to get put back in the pen. JW missed him on one try and of course Flint couldn't let that go. "It's harder to do when they're standing still, isn't it", was one of Flints comments when JW missed roping him one time. Oh yea, great to see Flint back. A little slower and not running up to the 2nd section but still a funny, funny guy.

Well no more events out here until Oct (Mohegan Sun). Guess I've got to start seeing how many tickets I need for that one.

Hope all have a Happy Mother's day this upcoming Sunday.
